What you would learn in Mastering Data Modeling Fundamentals course?
If you're an existing or future IT professional looking for reliable, practical ways to analyze and model data in the data management process, this is the right program for you.
In your course, students will apply what you've learned to use and develop models of data in each of the "classic" entity-relationship notations and use the "crow's foot" notation to highlight the most effective methods and practices covered during this class. Each section includes scenarios-based quizzes or tasks which focus on the essential learning goals for the content of that section. So, you'll feel confident that as you go through the course, you're picking the most important aspects of modeling data.
To create the course, I took inspiration from more than 30 years' worth of work that involved models of data and related fields. In the latter part of the 1980s, I was an engineer in software in the second largest supplier of computer systems, Digital Equipment Corporation. I created software to create a "conceptual and logical database design tool" or, also known as the data modeling tool. My consulting company, Thinking Helmet, Inc., is focused on analytics and data management-related disciplines in which modeling data is an essential element. I've put my hands up and tackled each aspect you'll be learning during this class. I've also learned some painful lessons, and I've incorporated a good amount of "lessons learned" into the materials for the course.
The course I'm teaching will guide you through the basic notions of data modeling through the most effective methods and practices needed to construct data models for your business. There are plenty of examples demonstrating the essential ideas and techniques discussed during the class. At the end of this course, you'll be prepared not just to apply these concepts to your work and perform the critical design and data modeling choices needed to be made by an understanding of the "art" of data modeling that goes beyond the basic techniques as well as design principles.
Mainly the course will include:
Concepts of foundational data modeling as well as fundamental concepts
The relationship between the design of databases and data modeling (Hint that they do not necessarily have the same characteristics!)
Different methods approach to modeling, and notations that can be used
The basics of entities, attributes, and relationships, and how to convey these concepts using a variety of modeling notations
How can we incorporate real-world complexity into our attributes, entities, and relationships?
The lifecycle of data modeling includes forward engineering a conceptual data model into a logical and later physical model and how to reverse engineer the physical model back to its conceptual level.
Different software-based methods for data modeling tools
Data modeling is an art and science. Although we've developed many best practices over time, we must make these or those kinds of decisions in our work with data typically based on extensive experiences rather than specific guidelines.
