Welcome to this class. WLAN, which is also referred to by the name of WLAN, also known as wireless LAN, is the term used to describe the use of electronic signals wirelessly to join devices, computers, and other computers. The most well-known wireless LAN technology currently used is Wi-Fi, an established set of standards for the way devices communicate with one another over wireless networks. Many other wireless LAN technologies exist. However, it's the one you're likely to see. Wireless LANs are electronic computer systems connecting multiple devices through wireless communication to create the local area network within an area of limited size, like schools, homes, computer laboratory campus, and office buildings. Wireless communication involves transferring data among two or more devices that don't use an electrical conductor to serve as a medium for the transfer. The most widely used wireless technologies utilize radio waves. Radio waves transmit distances that aren't always long, like just a few meters with Bluetooth or even millions of kilometers in deep-space radio communications. Wireless networks are networks of computers that are not connected with cables of any type. A wireless network allows companies to clear the cost of installing cables in buildings or connecting between various locations of equipment. The foundation of wireless networks is radio waves, an operation in the network structure's physical layer. It is not uncommon for people to ask "what is a wireless network" since they are present all over the world where the people work and live but how they function is usually unclear.
In the same way, many people assume that all wireless networks are Wi-Fi. However, many people are surprised to learn that the two aren't the same. Both utilize RF, but many kinds of wireless networks cover various technologies. Wi-Fi is a specific wireless protocol defined by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in the 802.11 specification and its changes. WiFi is the standard for wireless 802.11 and is the only wireless standard. Over time we've seen various versions of Wi-Fi. The most recent version is in the latest 802.11ax standard. Every variation of the 802.11 standards is designed for compatibility with 802.3 Ethernet -- the most commonly used LAN type because Wi-Fi usually extends the edges of the network.
